Peter Dutton is looking for a chain reaction. But not a nuclear one. An electoral one, like he got for The Voice. The latest polling from resolve suggests ‘the people’ see through it, they hate nuclear. But like I always say, people act socially. They follow a team. /1 #auspol https://t.co/M3bedaooRV

When you add the teams in? Suddenly big support for nukes! Quelle surprise. How much leverage did facts have against climate denialists, for the past 30 years? Or against Covid deniers? And here we are heading down the same road, with nuclear power. /2 https://t.co/LVK77miF6x

Facts flying in abundance, and counter-facts. Flooding the zone with shit at work, again. Societies don’t run on information. They run on status. People form teams and back their team in status games. In sport, in politics, in business. At school. Everywhere. /3

Dutton knows this. He’s doing with nuclear what worked for him with The Voice. He’s picking a fight. Because he knows fights generate teams, and energise the apathetic to take an interest in things they previously paid no attention to at all. /4

Suddenly everybody is an expert on climate, Covid, and now nuclear. Things that in my youth we left to experts to deal with, and got on with our happy and healthy lives. Until GOP attack politics arrived in Australia. /5

Transforming our most basic social operating system into ‘debates’. All designed to strip away existing hierarchies of expertise, to destroy trust in those hierarchies. And then vacuuming up the newly untrusting behind a populist Great Leader. Works every time. /6

It’s exhausting to now have to engage millions of people with not one idea what they’re talking about in getting even the most basic social infrastructure built. That was the plan. To disrupt, to obstruct. By pretending that’s ‘democracy’. Letting ‘the people’ run things. /7

We live in a representative democracy. It’s designed to NOT require the people to do much at all, except vote. To delegate the work of running the country, to others whose job that becomes. Not any more. With social media now we have social dysautonomia. /8

We’re trying to do our own social heart rate and breathing and blood pressure. We’re letting the passengers fly the plane. It’s just populism. Running a country using popularity as the only metric. Anything can be made popular, it’s just marketing. /9

And it taps into how humans ACTUALLY behave. Dutton knows this. If he destroys trust in the existing hierarchies, like the CSIRO, his flock will follow him off the edge of a cliff. Because they’ll always back their team. /end (Polling from SMH)
