Covid minimisers and their followers always use the same argument to say the pandemic is over.
‘Nobody is paying any attention to it.’
This is a very important window into the dynamics of our situation. /1
You can see clearly that their entire framework of assessment for the pandemic is ‘what other people are doing.’
No public health. No science. All social conformity.
And to be fair to them, this is how societies work. /2
The problem isn’t that the followers in particular are stupid. It’s that the usual guides to action are either missing in action, or are deliberately bad faith actors.
Or both.
Politicians are MIA.
Influencers are bad faith actors. /3
People will follow the lead of what other people are doing. At every age. And what other people are doing is follow a leader.
Or an influencer, in modern terms. To put a mask on for example is to violate the local social group. Like farting in an elevator. /4
It’s a twofold process, acting in unison. Peer pressure regulates how each person behaves, and that pressure is led by an influencer/leader.
We shouldn’t be surprised we’re doing almost nothing for either Covid or climate change. /5
Because ‘economies’ don’t have leaders. By design. They (the fantasy goes) run themselves. Via an ‘invisible hand’. A market.
All nonsense of course, because socially nothing has changed. People form teams, behind leaders. /6
What economy politics has done is just gut the official government/State leadership role. It describes it as interference.
Which leaves the field wide open to anybody else to run everything. Which is what’s happened. /7 https://t.co/r14SR9vyyK
Corporations and social media influencers now run the world. Under cover of nonsense about individual freedom.
Humans always act socially. Politics is a hopeless frame to understand anything. /end
