Three have been many outrageous slogan-driven violations of public health in this pandemic. But to me the most fundamental violation is one that is still not spoken about enough. That we’re simply ignoring what a pandemic actually IS. We allowed politics to re-define it. /1 https://t.co/XDS0KMbsDP
Look up as many definitions of a pandemic as you like. They talk about *infections*, and the extent of infections. A pandemic is about INFECTION. Infection is the damaging thing. Not the acute effect those infections have on people. Not even mentioned. This is the swindle. /2 https://t.co/thwW8jsUGp
Politics decided to simply ignore this definition, with its long history of public health expertise built into it recognising how dangerous *infection* itself is, and replace it with a calculus of severity. And a cynical calculus, that allows millions to still die. /3
Because it can always paint that as a ‘minority’ of ‘vulnerable’ people, in the total population sense. Despite it being millions dead! Using this logic, neither of the world wars was a serious event, because they killed only a small fraction of the global population. /4
This is worse than Orwellian, it’s total sociopathic lunacy. The invention of the concept of the public wasn’t about proportions, it was about connections. If you’re killing any number of people with an exponentially spreading virus, your entire population is under assault. /5
Because societies are connected. They’re not individuals or even groups living independently of one another. The hysteria over ‘lockdowns’ showed this inter-connectedness, stopping anything stops everything. You don’t need to lock-down a population to show this. /6
If all of our truck drivers for example decided to down tools, society would grind to a halt. It’s all connected. Same for teachers, police, water and sewer workers, or electricity workers. It’s all connected. This is why the definition of a pandemic is about *infections*. /7
Exponentially spreading infections. How dumb do you need to be to think that making your entire population continuously sick, with infections, is anything but collective suicide? And that’s not even taking evolution into account. /8
The fact that all of this continuously spreading infection allows the infectious agents to continuously evolve, to evade immunity. It’s basic public health, this is why uncontrolled infection leads to eternal epidemic waves. Infection is the key. Not severity of disease. /9
Because that severity will become orders of magnitude worse, if you don’t stop the infections. You make everybody sick, and trigger long-term chronic system collapse. All because we’re saying black is white, and ignoring the definition of what a pandemic is. /10
Instead of simply saying we need to prevent spread, which *is* our most fundamental public health task, we need to also say a pandemic is defined by number of infections. We can’t allow reality to simply be defined way for political convenience. /end
