The all-out assault on Google search by search engine optimisation (SEO) marketing is a story that should be front page news. In a world where we outsource expertise to the web, Google Search is our gatekeeper. If it becomes compromised, social collapse accelerates hugely. /1 https://t.co/lkqfnQTQhq
I was thinking about this yesterday after reading Cory’s thread. While it’s possible to see this as the sort of monopolist behaviour that’s a bit of a cause célèbre right now (with supermarkets in Oz, for example), I think this is a deeper problem. /2 https://t.co/XVAaLWcovs
The IT industry has always been a political libertarian Trojan Horse. Many of its biggest companies openly espouse libertarian philosophies and missions. While they disintermediate existing social processes and then monetise that disruption. The answer isn’t about monopolies. /3
It’s about that first theft, the disintermediation. The replacement of existing social institutions with products from the IT industry. This ‘cold, hard reality’ was discussed by the ABC this week. /4

Much of modern life is now completely dependent upon IT firms to function at all. And that has brought all of the possibly impossible problems of cybercrime with it. It’s classic capitalising gains and socialising losses. /5
Just one more global wrecking ball from the American Dream factories, a society now (but not previously) so incapable of a sense of collective anything that everybody there tries to make the mega-app that will let them dominate the world. /6
Without social cohesion, the best bet for somebody in the US is to build enough wealth to hopefully be able to create a gated community for themselves. The technologies invented to try to do that often rely upon predatory hijacking of existing social processes. /7
Which are then re-routed through the technology, and monetised. That’s the cold, hard reality discussed in the article this week (above). These marvel-products of Silicon Valley export this libertarian culture to the countries who adopt them. /8
Entire nations and the global community become incapable of functioning at all, without filling the revenue coffers of major IT firms. And as icing on the cake, some create social media platforms. /9
To allow communities in every country to ‘mobilise’ every possible flavour of toxic bullshit, in full-on assault on the country’s existing gatekeeper institutions. Cooker culture. The US has exported its domestic civil strife to the rest of us, using these technologies. /10
And yes, these technologies can also do staggeringly wonderful things. I love them too. But by not understanding them socially, we’ve crippled our societies, many of which now barely function. And why would we be surprised? /11
Political libertarianism is not just anti-society, it doesn’t believe society exists. That’s the endgame we’re now living inside. /end
