There it is, the core belief the US (and now others) hold that destroys democracy. The fake opposition between the ‘sovereignty of the people’, and ‘authoritarianism’. There is no such thing as ‘the people’. ‘Popular sovereignty’ is an oxymoron. 1/6 https://t.co/PrRiDptmBX

This is something I Tweet about all the time. How we’re destroying democracy by not even understanding what it is. It was never the replacement of sovereign (i.e. hierarchical) power with some magical system of ‘the people’ running the show. 2/6

That literally, physically and empirically can never happen because groups of people cannot function in that way. It’s not a matter of principle, it’s basic logic. Groups of people do not, ever, form a unified ‘group mind’ or will that becomes ‘the people’. 3/6

I watch the US fight the same empty fights year after year, against a straw man enemy of ‘authoritarian’ rule, at every appearance of some sort of hierarchy in life. Hierarchies are human life. They reflect values and expertise, as well as social status. 4/6

The fascism people fear emerges always as a populist movement to try to restore a hierarchical structure to a dysfunctional society. The result is a disaster. But what creates that disaster is the dysfunction. Not a ‘takeover’ by ‘authoritarians’ of ‘the people’. 5/6

Until we abandon the nonsensical idea, also behind ‘free markets’, that people as a mass self-organise societies (or anything), we will continue to have epidemic waves of tinpot populist demagogues and social dysfunction. /end
