The whole world waits on the edge of its seat for this week’s election, to see if Team Blue or Team Red will lead the great charge to do nothing meaningful against climate change and Covid.
Elections create our greatest passion. The Premier League of team sports. 1/8 https://t.co/jIlLimPYTC
Just as who wins your local football league makes no difference to things like climate change and Covid, who wins these elections doesn’t either.
The UK had euphoric election victories, a huge landslide, only months ago. 2/8
There’s little indication of any meaningful change likely to happen to the status quo there. There’s a not insignificant difference between what the rival parties do, when they’re elected, of course.
But none of it really disrupts the status quo. 3/8
Status does not allow challenge from elections, or anything else. Not without a fight. And that’s not even to imagine evil people plotting our domination in dark rooms.
Status hierarchies form our customs and traditions. ‘What we’re used to’. Few like that disrupted. 4/8
We entrenched status back in the centre of our societies, where it was for most of human history, in two ways.
Firstly with elections. Popularity will always select high status individuals. And secondly, with ‘the economy’. 5/8
Really just a spreadsheet of indicators that reflect a stable operation for the existing status quo.
It’s easily seen that nothing meaningful will happen if it disrupts any of those indicators. 6/8
You’ll ’spook the market’. Really meaning you’ll upset the status quo. That ‘the economy’ is a fictional construct to protect the status quo is something I don’t expect to be widely understood in my lifetime.
We’ve taken a means, and turned it into an end. 7/8
So root for your team in this week’s election. And here in Oz at the imminent federal election. It feels like just like going to the football!
Because it is just going to the football. That’s all it is.
