As societies we only functioned with a plurality of beliefs when the essential infrastructure of social life didn’t depend on those beliefs.
Now what you believe also determines how you live, and what threat you are to others. 1/5 https://t.co/J6TEYCJmMT
Social media is the culminating triumph of this insanity. On it society itself is organised around beliefs, rather than around basics like education, health, roads, water, electricity etc.
Before social media you lived amongst many who had fundamentally different beliefs. 2/5
Because the material work of your everyday lives, keeping the lights on, overrode differences in opinion. You made allowances.
On social media, beliefs *are* territory. Nobody has to negotiate basic material realities of community life there. 3/5
It’s by transacting society itself through these platforms that we destroy it. I’ve always absolutely refused to use the platforms in this way.
No ‘morning all, I’m having my first cup of coffee of coffee’. Etc. 4/5
The moment we surrender our everyday social lives to these platforms, it’s all over. The moment we think of them as ‘communities’.
Communities solve complex material problems of co-existence. They don’t form teams around ideas and battle other teams.
