At the time universal suffrage was introduced, it didn’t occur to many that it would destory the democracies using it. Many came to see it *as* democracy. A ‘voice of the people’.
There are no voices in voting. Only numbers. /1 https://t.co/goqDZKan1R
Numbers winners of elections then transform into any ‘will of the people’ words they choose.
Why it didn’t occur to us at the time that using popularity as the mechanism to select for ultimate power would end badly, is a mystery, to me anyway. /2
It’s surely obvious that if something has to be popular to get done, most important things won’t get done.
And eventually the whole system was gamed anyway. What began as a means, quickly became an end. /3
Now the purpose of winning elections, is to win more elections. It’s as empty as that. Little changes after elections. The people elected mostly don’t have a clue how anything works.
They’re just popular. They bring a smorgasbord of lunatic ideologies to power with them. /4
None of which match the actual material reality of how societies work. People honestly believe now the world is divided into things like ‘capitalist systems’ and ‘socialist systems’. Into ‘States’ and ‘markets’.
None of those things are real. Societies never changed. /5
They always were and always will be just people, acting *socially*. Not politically. Not economically. Socially.
Predominantly fighting for social status, in assembled and ever-shifting teams. /6
The leading teams are the political parties themselves, which cascade down through a proliferation of sub-teams, on every topic imaginable.
Elections enable this transformation of societies from top to bottom, into popularity contests, on every issue.
Team sports.
