A couple of months ago I shared the experience of my elderly mother here, who was admitted to hosptal with serious heart and lung issues. She contarcted Covid while there. What happened next. /1

I wrote to the Health Care Complaints Commission about the incident, because there were no infection control procedures in place in the hospital, for a very high risk patient. They flick-passed it to NSW Health. But more specifically, to the LHD. /2

For a 'local resolution process'. This was an immediate loss from my point of view, because it was obvious the commission felt there were no systemic issues in play. So I waited to hear from the LHD. /3

They finally rang today, sounded like some poor registrar from the local hospital. They sounded very apprehensive, probably expecting a bollocking. /4

I think all action and change is led in organisations and societies, it's rarely the front-line people who are responsible. It doesn't absolve them entirely, 'I was only following orders' was thoroughly tested in the 20th century and found to be badly wanting. /5

But we had a civilised chat. My beef isn't (mostly) with them. It's with the NSW Government and National Cabinet, who lead our Covid response. The explanantion for why my mother caught Covid, from the LHD? /6

They expect a certain amount of hospital-acquired infection to occur, due to the 'millions' (quote) of airborne viruses in circulation in the community. So my mother's infection was apparently within the margins of error of expected hospital-acquired infection. /7

I wasn't going to argue this nonsense, the poor guy had a literal hospital pass here. But she didn't catch cold, she caught the 3rd leading cause of death in Australia. There were no infection control procedures in place. /8

So the upshot is, nobody gave a shit about her catching Covid, so she caught Covid. And that not giving a shit came from the very top of the tree, National Cabinet. That's the national policy. They also say 'protect the vulnerable'. I think they mean marginal seats. /end
