China is strategy, the West is tactics. China saw the future was renewables, decades ago. Thus their astronomical investment in that area. Western democracy is 3-5 year electoral (popularity) cycles. All tactics, to win those elections. Nothing focused on social progress. /1 https://t.co/LqmysYRPY3

Aided by the fantasy we call 'the economy', the headless corpse of society, the delusion societies will run themselves optimally if we remove all of their planning and let everybody just argue all day every day. But this isn't China v The West either. That's far too simple. /2

Because China is also the West's factories. It builds the stuff we're too lazy to build ourselves. Its strategy is our strategy, for us, it's doing the strategic thinking and investment we refuse to do. /3

That's why the cost of the renewables we use as well is still plummeting. China's strategic thinking and investment. Yes there are all sorts of problem with China, this isn't just a thread of praise. Team sports has zero interest for me. /4

Because so much of what we do is internationalised, in many ways the massive Chinese State is the State for all of us now, given our own are increasingly being dismantled by libertarian zealots. And settle, team sport warriors, I have no desire to let China rule us all. /6

In many ways it already is, because it's doing the practical work of keeping our societies running, for us. Our politics is all hot air, decoupled now almost completely from any practical outcomes. Team sports, like a perpetual State of Origin game. /7

We had an Industrial Revolution over 250 years ago. But we haven't noticed the next one began mostly in our lifetimes. In China. The factories there are a wonder of the world. (And again, team sport warriors, yes there are problems there you can use for your team sports). /8

We're free at any time to go back to actually planning and investing and building things. But we won't, we're trapped in a populist social media 'debating' bubble now. Freeloading off the Chinese factories. All tactics, no strategy. /end
