Lots of data analyses focusing dutifully on the political framings of this pandemic, around severe disease, hospitalisation and death. I refuse that framing. The data tells a different story, for infections. All charts from: https://t.co/NqD2DmKJ8q /1 #auspol https://t.co/t5awWjIvRn
Sentinel testing and wastewater seem to be the best we can do for infection numbers now. And they both tell the same story, a pandemic continuing with merry abandon, while we normalise all of these infections behind the political (medical) framing of level of disease. /2 https://t.co/WtLrDZaerh
The sentinel testing for example suggests a worsening pandemic, not an improvement, between 2023 and 2024. Again I refuse to budge from the most obvious fact, that pandemics are defined by number of INFECTIONS. Not the point-in time severity of disease these infections cause. /3 https://t.co/WmRMtJ6m0f
The baseline of infections hasn’t really budged in a year, if anything it’s increased, particularly as RAT-reporting ended already in September 2023, and infections we know about *increased* since that time. Many will have been missed, and infections still trended up. /4 https://t.co/wOhkElCRbX
Compare with the flu, showing its clear seasonal pattern. Covid is nothing like it at all, it’s an infection carnival, year-round. Covid minimisers hate analogies because it brings to the for how absolutely ridiculous this situation is. But imagine this was car accidents. /5 https://t.co/81Oz5wOnqn
Where the number of accidents grew and grew, and sat at very high levels all year, but fewer people died because of better car technology. Would that be an acceptable situation? Of course not, the Covid situation is Orwellian and ludicrous. /6
Pandemics are defined by number of infections because it’s the rate of infection that kills, widely and across long time scales. Not the point-in-time acute morbidity or mortality. The definition also recognises that rampant infection allows pathogens to evolve. /7
Evolve to evade immunity. Basic evolutionary biology. Hijacked in this pandemic by a libertarian politics which thinks titrating severe disease to available hospital beds is public health. Mass, continuous sickness and disease, across the entire population. /end
