For rank amateurs like me, these seem obvious questions about hybrid immunity as an approach to Covid:
1) other diseases which are said to use this model, like colds and flu, are much less dangerous diseases. Do we just accept that each wave will mow down thousands? /1
2) Where is the actual evidence that infection with Covid creates any lasting immunity? Is it just a leap of faith?
3) Seasonal colds and flu have much lesser spread in societies and globally than pandemic Covid? What level of collective illness is acceptable? /2
4) Why do all of the other diseases on our existing immunisation schedules have detailed control strategies in conjunction with immunisation? But not Covid?
5) How do we shield the ‘vulnerable’ from infection? There has been almost zero success with this to date. /3
6) What will be the consequences of killing 20,000+ people in Australia this year to try to achieve hybrid immunity? Where was this foreshadowed in the national strategy?
7) What are the KPIs to tell us whether a hybrid immunity strategy is working, and over what time scale? /4
8) Given key industries including health care are already under emergency levels of strain, what’s the strategy to allow society to run well past the red rev-limit in perpetuity?
