I’ll use ‘Tories’ to describe all of the political bastards of the wider Anglo world right now, who stalled climate action for more than 3 decades, probably condemning us to extinction, and now won’t let us end a pandemic. How Nicholas Ridley gave them the world, short 🧵/1 https://t.co/YjcWSVHAiE
That’s Ridley on the far right (heh) of photo. Far right would be a perfect description for Ridley in multiple ways. In 1977 he handed Margaret Thatcher a strategy paper on how to smash unionism in the UK. Ridley had a grievance, his wealthy family had their coal and steel…/2 https://t.co/axb3ISDYbn
…interests nationalised by the Attlee government. He had a burning passion to privatise the UK. Part of his strategy plan was to identify one key major union, and create a faux war with it, allowing the government to move in and smash it, while using that as a pretext for…/3 https://t.co/iscgWDVIcz
…wider assaults on unionism and collective worker movements. It worked spectacularly well, people may remember the near-warfare that erupted in the battle with coal miners. The union movement in the UK never recovered from the sweeping decimation Thatcher then launched. /4 https://t.co/Ctvt2HQgfQ
Unions are the way the political interests of ordinary people are organised. Anger without organisation = protest, and nothing more. Which is us now, with social media helping to fracture the anger into multiple non-communicating tribes, while Thatcher’s heirs quaff the Moët. /5
The important point here is, the Tories are smart and know how to organise. They know that’s the route to power. The evils we’re seeing around us now are mostly of their making, but they’re also the result of the refusal of the Tory’s opponents to organise strategically. /6
Good people lack mongrel and strategic nous. They’d rather noble speeches and statements. We need a war room for the good people, to strategise how to fight the Tories and keep them to heel. That’s the ‘balance’ society needs right now. /7
And as I’ve Tweeted before, we actually have a fast and simple way to do that. Everybody should join a union. It doesn’t matter if they like unions or not or even if they want the union to do anything directly for them. Powering up the unions reverses the Ridley Plan. /8
The focus of the Ridley Plan and the Thatcher revolution was to destroy unions. They knew organised opposition was their true enemy. They’re telling us exactly what to do. Nothing has changed, our own LNP still despise unions with passion. They’re telling us how to beat them. 9/9
