Politicians and CHOs/CMOs seem all to be captured by the LNP framing of the pandemic. All believing you either lockdown/mandate things, or do nothing. But the public is everybody, make it a multi-layered response. /1 #covid19aus #auspol
- individuals and households? Give them free, good masks to use. Making them free acts as some incentive.
- ask businesses to ensure people at work are at minimal risk of Covid, as required under WHS law. Provide a hotline mechanism for employees to report poor practice. /2
- ask unions to help monitor workplaces.
- provide free tests for people. State governments should be paying some of that bill.
- create RATs with QR codes for automatic registration of results, as in the UK.
- provide tax incentives for businesses to upgrade ventilation. /3
- mandate working from home where that’s not difficult for a business, and have unions help assess rather than allow business to make that determination alone.
- cancel planned tax cuts to pay for Covid measures.
- mandate mask wearing in all public buildings. /4
- wearing of masks in private businesses should be part of the WHS assessment above, but hard to see many becoming exempt. This is a WHS basic requirement, politicians should not be hopelessly scared to require it, it was already the law. /5
- increase significantly the number of mobile, OUTDOOR testing and vaccination hubs.
- do a LOT more workplace-based testing and vaccination. Getting either a test or vaccine should be as easy as going to get a cup of tea.
I’m sure there are many more ideas any public…/6
…health professional or politician with the tiniest amount of wit and imagination could come up with. The previous government did everything in its power to avoid placing any Covid burden on businesses. That’s the big funding gap. It’s their job, under WHS. /end
