Oceans absorb 90% of the heat produced by us burning fossil fuels. They’ve hidden just how bad the warming is. Here’s the temperature of the top 2km of water in the oceans, since the 1950s. To give an indication of just how bad things are, between 2023 and 2024 (past the end of the graph) alone, an extra 16,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 joules of heat was added to this top 2km. We’re adding 6-8 atomic bomb’s worth of energy to the oceans every SECOND. The water vapour produced by evaporating oceans is itself a potent greenhouse gas, accelerating the warming even more. We’ll be boiled alive.
