It is interesting how we will tolerate carnage caused by human error, but one mistake by a machine is scary. It says something about how we view identity and machines and moral responsibility. This technology will continue because cars in their current form can’t survive. Still the only form of motorised transport that hasn’t shifted to a much more automated form of control. As the tests are showing, nearly a 10-fold reduction in collisions alone when semi-autonomous cars are used. But it’s not just about safety either, it’s about changing our entire relationship with cars so they stop being our little bit of individual territory on wheels.
