One of the fascinating things about oxygen I think is that it was a deadly poison to earlier forms of life on Earth. So what we see as vital to keep us alive was also what killed billions of other living things in the past. Our pollution today is likely a great boon to some future forms of life. This science also asks the great question - do we live 'in' the atmosphere? The answer is no, organisms create the atmosphere too. What climate science is increasingly showing is that the 'environment' is as much created as the things that live in it. Our technologies are just new parts of that constantly changing process. There is no 'nature', and no 'culture'. It's seamless.
