Fireys now say they can’t control the largest fires, which may burn for months. Until now the main public response to the fires has been the ‘Anzac effect’, worshipping people in the front line but ignoring actual causes. Now there is no front line, it’ll be interesting to see if attention shifts to the causes of the fires. Not confident, we still worship Anzacs today rather than learn the lessons of that war. Neither soldiers nor fireys want to be worshipped. They want to go home to their families.
