The Betsiboka Estuary, in Madagascar. On the ground people noticed the river running blood red almost, full of mud. From the sky you can see it's caused by the almost total removal of Madagascar's rainforests and other vegetation, creating enormous erosion. Aerial shots don't show you the 'top' view of what we see on the ground. They show you how what's on the ground links to everything else on the ground. It's a qualitatively different viewpoint. On-ground photos show individuals (people, trees, rocks etc.), aerial shots show societies. It's that social view of things that will become critical to solving our problems, I think.
