Probably the most telling thing about the idea of a ‘Big Lap’ for me is how much like the old Blighty days of empire the idea is. Like you need to accumulate the entire continent, in one trip. It’s about collecting or owning the spaces rather than having any meaningful relationship with them. And it betrays a lack of connection we have as newer Australians to *any* of the spaces, they’re all interchangeable ‘sights’. Travel porn, no real ongoing relationship, just looking.
