This is one birth of 'the economy' I think. The idea individuals are sovereign and that anything that gets in their way must be resisted is the Wild West. You can see it in modern ideas of the market, and in mass shootings in the US. The economy is just the modern version of this saloon, you don't understand American violence I don't think without connecting all of these dots at once.
