I reckon super was a colossal mistake. It financialised and privatised retirement. The vast sums of money now hoarded by private financial firms could have been money government uses to fund services for all. Super has also directly encouraged a changing view of retirement as a ‘lifestyle’, endless holidays and spending. Retirement used to be a time to retire, to stop and rest. It matters because the thing paying for those lifestyle retirements is vast tax concessions, which working people are paying for.
