This is quite seriously all the ‘economy’ is. A magic trick for grown ups, to protect the status quo by shrouding it in economic mumbo jumbo. Notice everything that might upset the status quo, like paying people more or stopping them becoming infected with Covid, is bad for the ‘economy’. This was all deliberate, the economy is based on equilibrium economic theory, that says society finds a natural equilibrium if you just leave it alone - free market theory. That ‘leave it alone’ IS the protection of the status quo. If you say society is a free market, you’re saying don’t touch it, everything will fix itself.
