I’m not a church-goer, but yup, this is exactly what happened. Religion became ‘belief’ in things, and ’faith’, that these beliefs are true. It’s why I’m deeply religious, but not at all in a way that is widely understood, today. I don’t ‘believe in God’ or ‘have faith that God exists’, or ‘belong to a religion’. None of those is religion. Religion is the transformative power of presence. I think we idolise and worship people to this day, people who give us that sense of magic and presence. And therefore make the same mistakes.
