Clive James once said 'freedom wears a crown', pointing out that highly educated and progressive people like him are supposed to support a republic by default. Royals are constrained by centuries of custom and tradition, their job is to be that history in the present. Republics have their own home-grown head of state. I'm not seeing the big advantage there.
