Australia Day is now, like everything else in our lives, an argument. A debate. A great liberation for 2026 in my opinion is to identify this mechanism and ignore it, by ignoring all of the popular debates of the day. They’re fake. The point is to make people argue, all day and every day, about everything. Mostly through social media, which is where people now live, not in towns or cities. Angry people are easy to mobilise for populist politics, which is why social media exists. Join me on this Australia Day, with a big yawn. That’s what it was for us, when I was a kid. A day off. I can celebrate that.
