When Michel Serres died last year, the French President paid tribute. The French revere their scholars. I think society is literally made of ideas, and if you don't understand them they'll destroy you. Great scholars are more important than navies, armies and air forces in keeping us safe, they battle with ideas for us. Australia has almost no interest in scholarship or ideas at all?
