Have a look at this city in Morocco, and then these trees exhibiting what is called 'crown shyness'. Trees leave distinctive gaps between themselves, in their crowns. It's a pattern almost identical to streets in old cities, before cars were invented. When you allow people to determine how urban spaces are shaped, you get a beautiful, 'natural', weaving together of life and buildings and movement. Once you introduce cars, suddenly movement takes over everything, and these patterns disappear.
