Mouse plagues are caused by the destruction of diverse ecosystems in favour of monoculture agricultural crops. This destroys most species, leaving the field wide open for single species to dominate, who no longer have competition. This is exactly how Covid happened, our destruction of ecosystems, of landscapes, destroying the diversity of species that prevents a single species (like the SARS virus that causes Covid) from dominating the others. The Economy, including farming, caused the pandemic. You can see the connections re-emerging now with the pending disaster from baiting these mice. The baiting won't end the plague, but it makes farmers feel like they're doing something. It will kill a huge number of species that feed on the mice too, like many species of reptiles and birds. Our loss of connection to landscape is the root problem behind all of our other problems.
