More Dart. Poise, not posture or exercise, will shape your body in the most perfect, healthiest way, while ‘doing’ nothing. You can be poised during exercise too. But the forces on you are enormous even sitting doing nothing, it’s one of the greatest pleasures in life, to become aware of the forces on you and watch yourself come into beautiful, effortless equilibrium with them. You’ll feel amazing, and nothing will make you healthier. (Dart lived to 95.) “Poise, however, is not acquired like physical strength...through the violent performance of exercises and sports, but through restful study, and observation. Poise is a body state achieved by steady and care-free education of the body for balance and the maintenance of balance. Poise is a character of repose or rest in the good body whether it is in the relatively static positions of lying, sitting or standing, or is actually in progressive motion during the activities of life’s daily routine or of sport.”
