This photo is 119 years old. The kids obviously have long finished their lives. But the longer you dwell on those faces, the more you physically feel their personality, their life. We’re so used to thinking images ‘represent’ things that I think we forget how miraculous that is, and what it means. Images capture eternity, just as language does. These little souls still live, through the image.
