Bushmen like the fictional Dundee I think are Australia's way of romanticising the chasm they all feel but rarely admit to, between themselves and the country they're living in. The Dundee archetype plays on that deeply uncomfortable chasm we've felt since the day we landed here. Finally, a whitefella who understands the country! In reality the overwhelming majority of Strayans live in holiday resorts masquerading as cities along the coasts, and those who do live inland usually bulldoze the landscape, to grow wheat and sheep and cattle, and dig mines. And bushmen have usually just watched too many old Western movies.
