With the colder months approaching, indoor air quality often collapses to pretty dire levels. It’s one of the main reasons we get more colds and flus in winter, and it’s very dangerous for Covid. A not very well known fact helps. Air flows much more easily in winter, with the bigger difference in temperature between outside and inside. It sets up draughts. You only need to open a window 5cm in winter (about half what you see in this picture) to get the same sort of airflow you get in summer, with the window wide open. I plead with teachers in particular to do this. Far and away the greatest improvement to education scores documented in the science was due to improving the air quality in classrooms. I rarely see a classroom that is ventilated at ALL. Many have windows, but they’re almost never opened. Even in warmer months. A disaster for Covid, but even without the pandemic kids will be much more alert and will learn more, with fresh air constantly flowing into the room.
