How did Australia and other countries get to the impossible point where they now have to choose between peoples' health, and their 'economies'? We got there because we started there. From day one of the pandemic leaders talked about protecting the economy while fighting the virus. That split was lethal stupidity, the economy doesn't exist, it's just the people. They could have gone for Stage 4 lockdown immediately and tried to eliminate the virus before it could spread. Instead they prioritised business making money and people going to the footy. NZ is an exception, and it may now be free to trade again, virus-free, while the rest of us sit nervously in our homes for up to 2 years, in crippled fictitious economies. To me if the lunatic idea of the 'economy' survives this pandemic, people have died for nothing.
