The first casualty of war is truth. Take the Russia-Ukraine war. Pitched to us as a battle between the authoritarian communists in Russia, and the democratic Ukrainians. In reality Ukraine has been run by powerful oligarchs for 35 years. Zelensky himself was an employee of one of these oligarchs. It's the war with Russia that has allowed Zelensky to break free from the hold of the oligarchy, using martial law to strip them of power and wealth. Right now the possible longer-term outcomes for Ukraine are grim. Either complete collapse as a separate State, or a country run by the military. The country itself is divided roughly in half in terms of allegiance, to either NATO or Russia.
