Australia (and much of the developed world) had pretty much full employment for 30 years after the war. Then in the 1980s unemployment took off. At exactly the time the 'market' and the 'Economy' replaced 'society' in our thinking. The Economy or market *requires* unemployment, a pool of workers able to keep wages low by being there to replace any bolshie workers who get ideas about wages. Government cannot be replaced by a market, we're discovering through much pain.
