David Hockney is an incredibly important artist, not least because he challenges a lot of our assumptions around pictures more generally. We live in the age of photography and film/video, and Hockney strongly believes this has made us forget how images work, and most importantly it has made us incapable of seeing or understanding space. He uses photography too, but one of his collage techniques, that he calls ‘joiners’, attempts to use photography against itself. Trying to restore how we actually perceive and experience space, using multiple perspectives in the one image. This collage of an old woman, Hockney would say, is much more real and accurate than a single snapshot of her would be.
