Dragons in mythology are ancient animals, who speak for ancient non-human knowledge. What is that knowledge? To hoard, to find treasure and sit on it. Not to create, or destroy. They speak for the natural abundance of the world. They sit on the treasures and stop humans using them. Many layers of meaning here.
