Our supposedly ‘democratic’ age is an illusion caused by the creation of institutional checks and balances created by earlier nobles in king’s courts, in rivalry with the king. Those checks and balances were invented to limit the power of the king, not in favour of ‘the people’, but in favour of his elite rivals - the nobles. As those checks and balances grew in scale, the status hierarchies that normally control how much people imitate each other in ordinary life collapsed. Leading to mass imitation, of everything, and thus mass rivalry. That’s us today. That mass imitative rivalry is in turn restoring a feudal structure, as ‘influencers’ re-create status hierarchies again. The new kings. Trump is a king, created by social media i.e. mass imitation.
