All in the ideas. When we say ‘bend down’, why doesn’t it occur to us that we’re already on the ground? We can’t get any lower. Young kids don’t bend down, their whole body just changes shape, no strain or effort. ‘Up’ and ‘down’ are just different body shapes, both entirely without effort or strain. Or they can be. I think this is one of the origins of our strange ideas about gravity. An adult will feel like ‘getting up’ is hard because they’re fighting gravity. The child feels no effort getting up at all, it’s just a change of shape. The adult is trying to ‘lift’ one half of themselves with the other half of themselves.
