The Name of the Rose. A murder mystery set in the Middle Ages, but with multiple interwoven themes. Eco shows us a world when people lived and died by ideas - the centre of the story is a Library built as a labyrinth, and the death and even Inquisition around certain ideas. It's our world, but today the fact ideas are at the centre of everything is much more hidden. William of Baskerville (Connery in the superb movie) is the hero, who fights by always testing the ideas. And ultimately fails. The Library burns. A handful of dogmatic ideas triumph - the same pattern repeats over and over in history.
