Inosculation is when two neighbouring trees self-graft, usually through rubbing creating an open surface where the graft can take. In this case, the smaller tree was cut down years ago, but remains alive because it became grafted to the larger tree next to it. It looks like the large tree is holding the small tree, keeping it alive, which is more or less what is actually happening.
