Democracy is often seen as the increasing freedom of individuals. But actually, that freedom is the increasing freedom to have others serve you. Under kings and emperors and tyrants, only they have the right to demand things of others. But as we increasingly imitated them, our societies are now places where everybody serves and is served by many others. That's all 'customer service' really means, and customers become more capriciously king-like every day. And the idea of 'public servants'. Democracy is really just distributed slavery or servitude. It's a society of mini-kings. (And this isn't just an analogy, it's how it actually evolved.)
