In saying Happy New year, I’d like to focus on the Happy part. So often in history the times of their lives when people found the most purpose, meaning and often even happiness was when they were confronted with a genuine threat to their existence. Like wartime. Horrible to live, but people often later missed the sense of solidarity and resilience that came from the threat to their collective lives. I’d love that to be a model for our lives today. Rather than the ‘kidult’ model which is much more about finding diversionary, distracting ‘fun’ experiences to avoid dealing with any sort of difficulty. I see that everywhere, even in workplaces that organise compulsory fun activities to try to bring staff together. I never take part in those, they’re childish. What brings people together is meaningful work together, against real challenges.
