The main evidence we have of ancient cultures is overwhelmingly about their ways of dealing with death. Death was the centre of their cultures, it gave everything meaning. For us death has become a disaster to be avoided at all costs, its one meaning has become the threat to our life and lifestyles. Ironically, the cultures who put death at the centre of their lives are the cultures who are the most living. Right now we're trying to 'manage' a pandemic as a temporary interruption to our lifestyles. That interruption is the true meaning of all pandemics. We fight the interruption much harder than we fight the virus, that's what I think we need to see here.
