This sort of innovation is happening everywhere. One of the most sad barriers to it expanding is community opposition, through lunatic ideas people get via social media. When I grew up most people paid no attention to things like energy generation at all. This is what social media has done, now as brilliant engineering firms line up to install extraordinary new renewables technology here, in just about every project a community group appears that opposes it with some batshit crazy bullshit they’ve picked up on social media. Electric cars the same. Somebody asked me why I post so often about EVs. It’s because cars are central to our culture in multiple ways, it’s not just about transport. They create our cities and shape how we think. And they’re the perfect example of how a change that should just happen because it’s the only thing that makes sense has to cut through an undergrowth of social media-generated bullshit.
