One of the great myths of democracy is the idea of ‘the people’ or ‘the community’. There is no such thing. A tiny handful of activists stir up trouble, and then attribute that trouble to ‘the community’. We see that right now in local government too, where social media activists get elected claiming to speak for the entire community. Humans never act as a group. Tiny numbers of people ‘influence’ them to act in certain ways. People skilled in governance for centuries have known this, and have often ruthlessly eliminated trouble-makers for this very reason. For example anti-vax, anti-renewables nonsense could be shut down in a day, by targeting the handful (probably a dozen at most) of major social media accounts that organise that supposed ‘community resistance’. It’s smoke and mirrors. The Australian electorate just smashed the anti-renewables cause at a full election. All these protestors need to be told to piss off, they’re gullible numpties swallowing propaganda they see on social media, usually from the US. Shut down the rubbish they’re reading on social media and they’d go back to leading normal lives.
