Good piece from Tim Dunlop here, but still stuck within the thinking of electoral democracy. The surge in support for One Nation, like Trump, is really people rejecting electoral democracy out of hand as a dismal failure. Because it is, how did we ever think using popularity as the way to select leadership would end well? The whole system becomes paralysed with fear of doing anything at all, for fear of unpopularity. The most stupid things can be made popular, and the most important things can be made unpopular. It's just marketing. It's like being held hostage by spoiled children who only want to eat lollies. Elections destroyed democracy, even more so because people believe they ARE democracy.
