Selfish and selfless. Another toxic false opposite, I think. As if we either look after ourselves, or look after others. If you frame it like that, you have no choice but to either be a dick to other people, or to be a slave to them. There’s no middle, unless that’s being a dick sometimes and a slave other times. The way out of this toxic opposite? Stop seeing what is good for you as different to what is good for others. They’re the same thing, because yes you’re an individual, but the raw material for that is social. Each one of us is a whole society. This toxic opposite extends into politics and business too, where people would have you believe you either look after the individual, or the group. Each individual is already a group, each group is nothing but individuals.
