What struck me again in the middle of the Bathurst floods yesterday is how destructive ‘the economy’ is. A sensible society would have looked at that river yesterday and said ‘I think people should take a day off, this thing could get nasty’. But the economy won’t allow that. Instead by mid-afternoon the town was split in two, with people trapped on either side, often with emergency reasons to be on the other side. And people from across the country, not just locals. The same story we’re living with Covid. Nothing can be allowed to stand in the way of the economy. Last year when we had a big snow drop, I got halfway to Bathurst and decided it was ridiculous, cars sliding all over the place. But the ‘open for business’ NSW Government were determined to keep that road open. They need to go, and fast. Election early next year.
